Placentia (Plaisance) was settled by the French in 1662 and is considered the French capital of Newfoundland (Terre Neuve).
Located on the Avalon Peninsula, this quaint little coastal town is nestled among the lush, forested hills and one of the most scenic bays in Newfoundland.
Old fortifications that once served to defend the land have been well preserved, as well as the stories and artifacts of the many relics of the past have been uncovered from the extensive archaeological digs that took place.
The Placentia Bay area provided rich fishing resources and excellent harbours, many with flat rocky beaches that facilitated drying fish.
The Beothuk and Mi’kmaq First Nations both made use of these assets, as the remnants of old campsites attest.
The bay’s natural riches were also utilized by fishermen from Basque, French, and English regions as early as the 16th century.

Placentia Bay consists of many islands, and all had thriving communities which were forced to relocate during the resettlement.
One of the most noteable land and sea episodes sheds more light onto the stories of the island of Placentia Bay.

The Placentia area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, kayaking and surfing!
